A story of unspeakable pain, unshakable faith, and unimaginable grace.
Manila, Philippines — In a world where justice is often demanded through outrage, Joy Tan-Chi Mendoza took a path few could imagine. After surviving one of the most traumatic crimes imaginable — being assaulted by seven armed men at the age of 15 — she chose not to live in hatred or fear.
She chose to forgive.
And in doing so, she turned her pain into a platform of healing and hope for thousands of survivors around the world.
The Night That Changed Everything
In February 1992, what started as an ordinary evening turned into a nightmare. Armed men broke into the Tan-Chi family home while Joy’s parents were away. After robbing the house, the intruders turned to something even more horrifying: sexual assault.
Joy, along with two family friends, was raped by seven men, each one taking turns as she prayed silently for strength. She later recalled:
“They could touch my body, but I knew they couldn’t touch my soul.”
This moment of clarity in the middle of unimaginable horror would become the cornerstone of her healing journey.
A Life-Changing Decision: Forgiveness
After the attack, Joy was thrust into a process of recovery that would test her emotionally, physically, and spiritually. While most would understandably be consumed by rage or despair, she made a different choice — one inspired by her deep Christian faith.
“I realized that forgiveness wasn’t about letting them off the hook. It was about setting myself free.”
Joy explained that in choosing to forgive, she wasn’t erasing what happened — she was refusing to let it define her life or rob her of her future.
Turning Trauma into Purpose
Today, Joy Mendoza is not only a survivor — she is a wife, a mother of six, an author, and a global speaker. Her book, “When A Good God Allows Rape,” dives deeply into her personal journey and how she found peace through faith.
She has shared her story on platforms like Toni Gonzaga’s “Toni Talks”, Christian conferences, and trauma recovery workshops. Wherever she speaks, her message is clear:
“There is life after trauma. And there is healing after heartbreak.”
Public Reactions: A Nation Moved
Since sharing her story, Joy has received an outpouring of support from viewers, survivors, and advocates worldwide. On YouTube and social media, the video quickly went viral.
Some of the most common reactions include:
“This story shattered me and inspired me at the same time.”
“Forgiveness like this is hard to even imagine — but she did it.”
“She is proof that we can rise above even the darkest moments.”
Why Joy’s Story Matters Now More Than Ever
In a time when trauma is often hidden or misunderstood, Joy’s honesty is both refreshing and powerful. She reminds the world that:
Healing is possible, even when wounds seem too deep.
Forgiveness is not weakness, but the ultimate strength.
Faith can be a lifeline, not a cliché.
Her testimony doesn’t just highlight the resilience of one woman — it gives voice to millions who have suffered in silence.
In Her Own Words:
“I don’t want to be remembered as a victim. I want to be remembered as someone who overcame — someone who forgave. And someone who helped others do the same.”
